We were thrilled, very thrilled indeed, to get our hands on organic cotton lawn through KV Kuppam and Bishopston Trading.
Here's our chance to make hankies which are elegant, colourful, ethical and organic. This hand-dyed and handloomed fabric is so delicate that it was clear the only way to "treat it right" was to sew it by hand. But this process is very labour-intensive. We have since added a machine-rolled option.
The long-winded process
The fabric has first to be washed (preshrunk), dried on the line, ironed and cut in small batches.
Machine embroidery designs (if any) are added at this stage.
The handkerchief has then to be ironed and re-cut (due to stretching from embroidery work).
Then only can we hand-sew the edges (this process takes up to two hours). Or we could machine-roll it.
It is then ironed again.
Depending on its destination it is either wrapped in biodegradable cellophane or put in a bag to keep it clean.
